The Human form has long been the touchstone for artists seeking mastery of drawing. No matter how abstract my style becomes, I continue to challenge myself with life drawing. I am like a diabetic having to draw blood and test it. If I can't draw the figure then I realize that I am verging on unconsciousness as an artist. That is when I have to stop everything and center myself again.

Of all possible subjects, the human face intrigues me the most. If I am painting a commissioned portrait, then I capture the likeness of the subject. When I am painting just for me, however, I have moved away from caring about the likeness - I am searching for feeling - intelligence, endurance, joy. These qualities come from within - the model is merely the catalyst for their release.
